The third and final day of the CFA Annual General Meeting was devoted to presentations and clean-up of CFA business.
Presentations included:
- Dr. Tom Keenan of the University of Calgary provided a thought provoking presentation on how to use e-commerce and technology tools.
- The Honourable Gerry Ritz, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, addressed recent priorities of his Ministry including implementation of the Growing Forward agreements, trade issues and trade access to Hong Kong and Jordan, environmental initiatives, Bill C-13, and the Canadian Wheat Board. Following his presentation, Minister Ritz participated in a lively and wide-ranging question and answer dialogue with the CFA delegates.
- Dr. Michael Boehlje of Purdue University provided an overview of the rapidly changing farm economy and what farmer must do to successfully manage their enterprises in such turbulent times.
CFA elections were completed with Garnet Estell of the British Columbia Agricultural Council elected as 2nd Vice President defeating Chris Kletke of the Keystone Agricultural Producers. APAS President Greg Marshall was elected to the CFA Executive.
Debate of policy resolutions was also completed during the day. APAS is pleased that APAS policy resolutions on intergenerational transfer programs and livestock were adopted as CFA policy.
Following completion of the CFA meeting, APAS representatives visited "Parliament Hill" for meetings with a number of Members of Parliament:
- Alex Atamanenko, NDP Agriculture Critic, and Malcolm Allen, NDP Deputy Agriculture Critic
- Ralph Goodale, MP for Wascana, and Wayne Easter, Liberal Agriculture Critic
- Tom Lukiwiski, MP for Regina Lumsden Lake Center
- Ray Boughen, MP for Palliser, and Ed Komarnicki, MP for Souris-Moose Mountain
APAS representatives are of the view that these meetings were extremely valuable in terms of relationship building and discussing key APAS policy objectives and member concerns on livestock, safety nets, railway costing, and Bill C-13.
APAS delegates ended the day on a high note with the announcement of $71 million for the provinces livestock sector announced by Minister Bjornerud today.
