Resolution Title: Regulation of Strychnine

Resolution:

WHEREAS The Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA) of Health Canada issued a re-evaluation decision on June 29, 2018 for Strychnine and its associated end-use products; and  WHEREAS Strychnine is the most effective way to control Richardson’s Ground Squirrel (Spermophilus richardsonii); and

WHEREAS Uncontrolled Richardson’s Ground Squirrel populations can cause large productivity losses and have a significant impact on agricultural production; and

WHEREAS There currently are no viable alternative products available to producers;

BE IT RESOLVED That the Pest Management Agency (PMRA) of Health Canada issue a decision to allow for continued use of Strychnine and its associated end-use products until viable alternatives are available; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED That the Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada actively pursue research and development of viable, effective and economic alternatives to Strychnine.
