Resolution #: | L1-2019 |
Resolution: | WHEREAS Saskatchewan has Canada’s second largest cattle and fifth largest swine production; WHEREAS Many livestock producers depend upon purchased feed to grow, maintain or finish their animals; WHEREAS Livestock producers expect feeds purchased to be safe and contribute to the safe production and maintenance of their livestock herd; WHEREAS Under the Feeds Act, no person shall manufacture, sell, import or export in contravention of the regulations any feed that presents a risk of harm to human or animal health or the environment. and WHEREAS Current contaminant standards for many mycotoxins such as Deoxynivalenol (DON) and Ergot Alkaloids are set out as guidance rather than maximum allowable amounts under the Feed Regulations; WHEREAS Excessive contaminant levels are often not detected until after the harm has been observed through health and production problems within the breeding herd or offspring; WHEREAS Regulations periodically come up for review; BE IT RESOLVED That the Government of Canada include maximum contamination levels for mycotoxins such as Deoxnivalenol (DON) and Ergot Alkaloids within the Feed Regulations to provide additional regulatory authority to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency over mycotoxin levels that exceed maximum allowable tolerances. |
