Resolution Title: Reserving Word Meat for Products Produced from Non-Lab Based Animal Products

Resolution:

WHEREAS Food labelling is an important means of communicating information between a prospective purchaser and seller of a food product;  

WHEREAS Under the Safe Food For Canadians Act, it is prohibited for a person to manufacture, prepare, package, label, sell, import or advertise a food commodity in a manner that is false, misleading or deceptive or is likely to create an erroneous impression regarding its character, quality, value, quantity, composition, merit, safety or origin or the method of its manufacture or preparation; 

WHEREAS The Regulatory definition of a meat product is “the carcass of a food animal, the blood of a food animal or by-product of its carcass”; 

WHEREAS Protein Based food products are often marketed as meat substitutes or to be implied as “better” than meat; 

BE IT RESOLVED That the Canadian Food Inspection Agency be directed to enforce the requirements that cultured or manufactured protein products be labelled to reflect that they are simulated, contain no meat products and are not meat replacements.
