Resolution Title: Development of a Single Use Plastics Strategy to Mitigate Impact on Agriculture
Year: 2019
Resolution #: E&T8-2019
Resolution:

WHEREAS Agriculture uses single-use plastic on farm for purposes such as twine, bale wrap, and grain bags and at the retail level for packaging fruit, meat and other products;

WHEREAS A ban on single-use plastics used in Canada’s agri-food sector could result in more food waste and the downloading of costs onto primary producers;

WHEREAS Canada is a large producer of agricultural products and byproducts such as straw and residue that could be used as alternative packaging;

BE IT RESOLVED The federal government work with stakeholders to develop an agricultural plastics strategy to assess opportunities and mitigate potential harms resulting from a phase out of single-use plastics.
