Resolution Title: Canadian Food Inspection Agency enforcement and review of the Feeds Act
Year: 2023
Resolution #: L 6-23
Resolution:

WHEREAS the Canadian Food Inspection Agency is charged with monitoring the quality of animal forages under the Feeds Act;

WHEREAS the CFIA Act and the Feeds Act have not had a major update since the 1980s;

WHEREAS the quality of forage blend seed sold that is covered by this Act has not been monitored or enforced, resulting in the loss of life for livestock;

BE IT RESOLVED that APAS lobby the federal government to open up the Feeds Act and require stricter penalties for seed and forage companies that are found to be selling forage products that are toxic to livestock; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that any seed and feed products sold for forage are included and regulated under the Canadian Food Inspection Agency and that labeling requirements ensure that tags and labels are consistent with product usage and marketing.
